Andrea Davey oversees our Queensland commercial branches and is known for her positive and enthusiastic leadership as well as her strong instinct for business. Andrea talks about her career in insurance, the challenges of technology and an unforgettable trip to Las Vegas.
How did you get your start in insurance?
I was selected for a role as the Brisbane Commercial Branch Manager. It was an opportunity to change my career path while continuing to work with business customers I liked and also working for a leader that I connected with. I was very impressed by Sarah’s (Gallagher Chief Executive – Australia Sarah Lyons) vision for the company direction during the interview process for the role and I really wanted to be part of the journey.
What attracted you to the industry?
I think what was most attractive was the whole Gallagher opportunity for working with a fast-growing company in Australia, listed on the New York Stock Exchange, a Fortune 500 Company with offices all around the world that was comparatively different from the big four banks, and that it was a global company, was new and appealing.
How has your career progressed?
Already in a short period of time Gallagher has created career path growth for me. In 2017, I was promoted to Area Director Brisbane & Beenleigh Professional Associations. In 2018, with a structure refresh, my role expanded to include responsibilities for North Queensland and Toowoomba. As a growing company I see potential for many future career development opportunities with Gallagher.
What are some of the challenges for the industry from your point of view?
The world is moving at a rapid pace and staying relevant as insurance brokers is most important. Adopting new tools and practices in a technology-driven digital environment will equip us to live up to client expectations in an ever-changing environment.
More regulatory practices coming into effect in the industry will ensure our relevance as a professional business adviser. As a large global company I think regulation will become our greatest opportunity in the future in Australia.
What have been your career highlights?
Definitely the Power of Gallagher conference in Las Vegas in February 2017 was a fantastic introduction to the company. I had the opportunity to experience our business on a level that helped fast-track becoming part of the company and understanding our business on a global scale.
At the conference, which had more than 1200 attendees and an address by global CEO and chairman Pat Gallagher, we were able to hear from all divisions of the business, and in meal breaks to meet and dine with senior leaders and executives from all over the world. It certainly demonstrated our family values and exactly why the conference was called Power of Gallagher. For me it reinforced I had made a very good decision.
What do you enjoy most about working at Gallagher?
I love the diversity of any day, but what I enjoy most is seeing my team be successful with helping their clients and feeling proud of the job they do.
Do you have any advise for young women entering the industry?
Always be yourself, be positive and don’t be shy, show your confidence and act generously to others.
Whether you are an industry veteran or looking for a change of path, Gallagher could be the right place for you.
