riday 18 October kicks off a star studded 2-day showcase of established and up and coming rugby league talent, the inaugural Downer Rugby League World Cup 9s at Bankwest Stadium, Parramatta, New South Wales.
Gallagher is proud to be a sponsorship partner of what promises to be a hugely popular event with fans of the sport, identifying team strengths and ascendant stars in 28 matches of 9 minute halves between sides representing 12 countries for the men’s tournament and 4 for the women’s.
With 9 players per side, expect to see a much faster game with more running metres, more ball in hand, less scrums, no bunker, a bonus point zone and golden try.
Stars to watch out for include ex-Warriors captain and current Cronulla Shark Shaun Johnson, whose balletic moves suit this fast style of game, and England’s George Williams who recently added his super powers to the Canberra Raiders line up for the 2020 season. We’re predicting Aussie Josh Addo Carr will be the one nobody can catch.
With both international and Australian players filling the national teams according to nationality or cultural identity, it’s an exciting mix that gives them fresh opportunities to face off and measure themselves against known and new rivals.
Plus there’s a strong contingent of NRL ambassadors from most of the NRL clubs, and the sport’s recent greats.
“This partnership gives Gallagher a supporting role in growing community engagement, pride and team and individual development which are all values at the core of the company’s operations,” says Gallagher National Head of Sport Steve Van Leeuwen. “We’re pumped to see where this can go, for the players and for the sport.”
