How did you get your start in insurance?

As a young person I was looking to get out of real estate and came across a job with a small family broker. I apparently just missed out on winning that role but they referred me to the manager at CIC and he hired me.

This job gave me a good foundation for launching my insurance career as I was exposed to a wide variety of general underwriting that looked at risks and claims. This gave me a springboard to gaining a position ‒ and being promoted ‒ in an international brokerage. It was here that I developed a love of allied health and risk profiling.

What attracted you to the industry?

I love that no day or client is the same, and the knowledge I gain of so many different industries through risk profiling clients. One day I could be talking to a construction contractor and the next a food manufacturer. By dealing with such a wide variety of people on a day-to-day basis I developed a passion for trying to mitigate their risks by ensuring they are fully aware of their insured exposures, so that they can make informed decisions about self-insured risks.

Plus the scope of work means you can work on legal contractual requirements for your client and then be talking to a rehab provider and allied health professional while assisting the client with workers’ compensation claims.

Stand-out highlights

  • Seeing the look of sheer relief on a client’s face when I was able to negotiate favourable settlement terms on a complex total loss.
  • I was also awarded Broker of the Year at Aon in 1998.

Career path progress

I hope to continue to grow my current book and mentor younger colleagues. Seeing the next generation succeed and knowing that I had a small hand in assisting them is exciting.

What are some of the challenges for the industry from your point of view?

With the introduction of e-commerce the world and its insurance requirements are changing. Insurers and brokers need to stay ahead of the game in a rapidly evolving and increasingly digital marketplace where our clients’ business structures are tending towards the unconventional and their insurance requirements are becoming more sophisticated by the year.

What do you enjoy most about working at Gallagher?

The people and their resolution to do the best job they can for the client.
