Gallagher Rising Stars: meet Chris Lawry

The Gallagher Chief Executive Rising Stars Program for 2019 is aimed at nurturing skills development and fast-tracking the careers of promising staff members through a combination of workshops and practical hands-on challenges to solve business problems.

Chris consistently demonstrates commitment to quality and a structured, solution-oriented approach, always keeping bigger picture in mind. Head of AU Financial Control & ANZ Group Reporting, Finance Jo Pickard describes him as clever, a forward planner and very team/goal oriented, taking on new tasks and projects and delivering them to a high standard. "Chris’s willingness to help bring the Milne finance team into the Gallagher family really made a difference to the acquisition," she says, adding that he took on training and ensuring Milne's compliance with deliverables in addition to his regular workload.

Chris LawryHow long have you been with Gallagher?

I have been with Gallagher since September 2017.

What’s your background?

I started my career in external auditing with KPMG and then worked in the financial accounting team at ASX prior to arriving at Gallagher. Currently I work in the financial control team based in North Sydney, with a focus on financial reporting and process improvement.

What is the scope of your current role?

The scope of my role is quite broad and includes the completion of the month end close, financial reporting, review and analysis of financial results, monitoring of financial controls, and management of a direct report, as well as cash flow and investment management.

How did you come to be part of the Rising Stars program?

I saw the program being advertised and thought it would be a great opportunity to accelerate my career at Gallagher. My manager also encouraged me to apply and has been supportive throughout the program.

What particularly earned you recognition: activities, projects?

I believe building a knowledge sharing culture within our team, along with taking a proactive approach to improving the processes around our month end close and the use of the Gallagher Service Centre (GSC) were key to being selected.

How is the program contributing to your career and skills development?

The program has provided me with a diverse network from across Gallagher, including members of the executive team.

The project we are working on as part of the program is also giving me a great insight into all the stakeholders that need to be engaged and all the angles that need to covered before a project gets off the ground.

On a personal level the program has contributed greatly to my self-awareness which is of great use when working in a team and when under pressure.

What has been your most valuable learning?

Most valuable for me has been the realisation that the best way to lead is to remain true to yourself, as people respond to those who are genuine and are able to show vulnerability.

What are your challenges?

Like most, balancing my day to day tasks with the projects that will provide longer term benefits is a constant challenge.

As a global business we also face the added challenge of trying to coordinate meetings across multiple time zones in order to collaborate with colleagues based across Australia and the globe.

What’s your ambition for the future?

My ambition is to use the learnings from the program to further my career at Gallagher and to take on management and leadership roles in the future. I also hope to use the same learnings to develop others in our team so that they can get the best out of themselves.
