How long have you been with Gallagher?
I have been with Gallagher in Sydney for two years, but previous to that I was with Gallagher in the UK where I was based in London working in the Financial Institutions broking team for 5 years.
What’s your background?
My background is financial lines insurance, specialising in financial institutions. I began my career at Aon in Sydney in the program design and placement team before I moved to London. In London I specialised in the placement of retail and wholesale financial institutions risks for nearly nine years before relocating with Gallagher back to Sydney.
What is the scope of your current role?
I am currently the NSW/Vic Manager for the Financial Lines team. This involves managing my own portfolio of clients, new business, running a team and liaising with insurers.
How did you come to be part of the Rising Stars program?
Our CEO Sarah Lyons mentioned the program on one of our all business calls. It sounded like a challenge and something that was different to the usual norms of my role. It also sounded really appealing to be one of the first Rising Stars!
What particularly earned you recognition: activities, projects?
I believe it was the work I have been doing with my existing and new client base. Despite having a number of challenging renewals my team and I have gone above and beyond for our clients to ensure we have sourced the best result for them, along with consistent and clear messaging about not only the challenges that we face, but also the most beneficial approach to an insurance process to achieve the best outcome. Communication is key on both sides.
How is the program contributing to your career and skills development?
It has been a great learning experience to really see how to get a project of the ground, from understanding the key stakeholders, managing road blocks, learning about what drives people, problem solving and how to tackle an issue that can’t be easily measured. Looking at the concept of culture has really been an eye-opening experience from someone with a broking background!
What has been your most valuable learning?
The Rising Stars project team I am in has been dealing with factors around culture. Culture is critical to an organisation and not something I really considered before joining the Rising Stars. It’s also made me sit back and think about what really drives culture, what creates a culture and why we seek to create a strong culture. It’s also been highly topical in the media after the Financial Services Royal Commission.
What are your challenges?
Juggling the project alongside my job is quite the challenge! The insurance market conditions are tough for financial lines placements at present so it’s never been more of a challenge than it is now, so it’s critical to allocate time and energy accordingly and ensure you are super organised.
What’s your ambition for the future?
To use my learnings and development through this course to become a better leader in the future. It’s a great opportunity to push yourself outside the box and contribute to your future with Gallagher.
