Gallagher women in focus: meet Area Director Kylie Hull

Personable and dynamic, Dubbo-based Area Director Kylie Hull’s colleagues describe her as an inspiring leader who's generous in her willingness to give back to her regional community, both compassionate in her concern and completely approachable.

Kylie HullHer hard work and attention to detail, combined with deep knowledge of the industry and the client base, have driven her career progress, but Kylie also invests in developing potential in her team, leading with confidence and a burning compulsion for her division to succeed.

Describe yourself in 3–5 words

  • A passionate and dedicated leader (with a strong belief that success comes from leading from the front and inspiring through example).

How did you get your start in insurance?

Like most people I fell into insurance, however, I soon found it was my passion for people that pushed me to want to be a leader. Gallagher has given me the opportunity to be part of an amazing team and the company provides the framework for you to push yourself as far as you want to.

What attracted you to the industry?

Insurance ticks all my boxes. I love helping people find a solution to their problems, I love building relationships that help me do that and I also love closing a deal and winning a client, and I get to do that every day – it is the best job in the world!

Stand-out highlights

There have been so many highlights since joining Gallagher but the two stand-outs for me would have to be attending the Power of Gallagher in Las Vegas in February 2017 and receiving the Branch Manager of the Year award for Australia.

To receive this award was an incredible experience in itself but to be up on stage in front of over 2000 of my colleagues from all over the world and getting to meet Pat and Tom Gallagher was absolutely amazing.

The other highlight is having the opportunity to be part of a driven team who all believe in their leader. I think it is rare to have so many people in such a large organisation totally behind their boss but Sarah Lyons has achieved this.

Career path progress

I started out as a receptionist with Commercial Union Insurance after graduating Year 12. I left Commercial Union when my boss at the time decided to open up his own brokerage and this is where I am still working today, with just a different name on the front door.

I have very high expectations of myself and have always loved learning. I relish tackling new challenges and am always looking for something new to master. My roles have always been in sales and administration, as women so often tend towards, however being at Gallagher I have had the coaching and mentoring from leaders who have believed in my ability and pushed me way outside my comfort zone, which has enabled my career progression from team leader to area director in just a few years.

What are some of the challenges for the industry from your point of view?

Our ageing workforce means a lot of knowledge is leaving the industry that our current learning and development regime cannot replace. We have to find a way to promote our industry so people stop “falling into insurance” and instead choose it as their career.

Living in the country we also need to find a way to take advantage of technology to bridge the distance to our customers and deliver them the service they need in a more appropriate way.

What do you enjoy most about working at Gallagher?

Having the opportunity to work alongside and learn from some of the most talented and inspiring women in our industry.

Advice for young women entering the industry

Too often we sit back and don’t speak up, so value your contribution and don’t be afraid to share it. Also don’t be afraid to have difficult conversations whether it be with your boss or members of your team – letting things fester will never end well – people will respect you more for having done so.
