Years in the industry
With Gallagher since
Describe yourself in 3–5 words
- Easy going
How did you get your start in insurance?
I completed a Certificate 3 Business Administration Traineeship with OAMPS, fresh out of school, and worked in its Fuel & Transport division (OTIS), building client relationships, and I’ve never looked back.
What attracted you to the industry?
I realised insurance broking was more than just providing insurance solutions: it required me to connect with people. I’ve always loved the variety of work, the opportunity to think outside the box and building connections. In my initial years I especially loved being a part of the Women in Insurance Association – networking with like-minded individuals and feeling part of a bigger community.
- Seeing some of my colleagues grow and take on their own career path in the industry and knowing that in some small way I helped them at the start of their journey.
- Moving companies and having a number of my clients follow.
- Fulfilling a role as a board executive for one of our main insolvency industry networking associations and developing skills across event management, marketing and leadership.
- Meeting some of the most amazing, inspirational men and women within Gallagher who have given me encouragement, ideas and support along the way.
Career path progress
I always knew that I wanted to be 'successful', I just never envisaged exactly what that would look like. From completing renewal invitations with clients at their fuel depots, being on site at one of the largest food production chains, hosting women’s networking events and building a solid relationship with one of the national Top 4 banks – these all have led to amazing experiences.
I’ve had some wonderful mentors encourage and help me. Since being with Gallagher there have been endless opportunities and I’ve felt as though I could spread my wings and fly, living out my vision of success.
What are some of the challenges for the industry from your point of view?
Our industry is about people, understanding people and people management. Communication is essential. As the world is becoming more digitally advanced and businesses are relying on immediate responses it concerns me that we may become detached from developing rapport with our clients, putting us in a category of a ‘service’ rather than their advisor and valued business partner, diminishing our value and worth.
What do you enjoy most about working at Gallagher?
The main one is the people and the values of the company. In a large global organisation it’s easy to get lost in the crowd, but at Gallagher there’s a genuine care and respect for ensuring all levels of the business are valued and supported.
Advice for young women entering the industry
We tend to place high expectations on ourselves, from having the perfect career to having work/life balance and still kicking goals. It’s important to have a vision of success, but also be kind to yourself. Don’t allow your expectations or insecurities to overpower your style or the uniqueness that you bring.
I would also say don’t limit yourself. The insurance industry is evolving all the time and the best part about it is the opportunities it offers – there is room to grow and adopt additional skills across a multitude of roles where you can truly reach your full potential. Ensure you have a mentor and focus on the journey rather than the end goal, because it’s the process of the journey that builds your character and equips you for the next challenge.
